As far as forks go I don't know that much because I haven't had to work on mine, but two of the XJ-Owners on the list made a tool to remove the inner dampener tube.
One description and pictures are at this site made by Mark Yerkes.
The other was emailed to me so here it is:
Here pix of a tool to remove the inner dampener tube from XS/XJ forks. This
was mentioned recently on the XJ list and I said I'd take pix of it.
Unfortunately I don't have room on my site for it so here it is. I took one
pix just of the unit then one against a rule to show scale. This is a 1" x
14" hex headed bolt (shank is approx 1/2" dia. The bolt head comes out
fitting a 19mm socket. Same for the matching nut. I tack-welded the nut to
the bolt.
To use: Basically you remove the spring from the fork, insert the took into
the inner tube then with an allen wrench (I believe 8-10mm) on the bolt in
the bottom of the fork and (I usually use a rachet with a 19mm socket)
wrench on the tool you can break the bolt loose. Reverse the process to
reassemble. FWIW I use Locktite Blue to reassemble the dampener tube
assembly.
